One of the basic assumptions of sand play from a Jungian psychology lens is within every individual is a strength, an inner healer that wants to move towards emotional release and healing. This assumption supports working with clients coming with all backgrounds. Inherent within every individual is the capacity to move towards wholeness and healing with the right resources and support.
Sandplay has the potential to integrate mind and body, to expand self-knowledge, and activate regenerative and healing energies. Sand and symbol work can be used as tool to support clients from a trauma background and facilitate resource building. Often where there is trauma the capacity to describe and process the trauma isnt supported. Trauma is a non-verbal experience, whereas imagination and sand play can support expression and emotional release in a non-theatening and safe way going at the clients pace. Thus a feeling of empowerment in their healing journey.
From a neurobiological perspective the somatic and imaginative way in which sand and symbols can non-threateningly support safety and regulation allows for a gentle movement towards trauma release.
With empathy, compassion and an understanding of the nervous system and neurobiology the therapist can offer clients a trauma informed mind and body pathway to resolving stuckness, empowering healing and movement towards wholeness. Sandplay is a playful, sensory and developmentally appropriate tool to this end.
